Grow an Avocado Tree in a Small Container at Home
Avocado is a type of berry, also known as butter fruit or alligator pears. They have a lot of health benefits and hence, one must consider including them in their daily diet. Avocados have a lot of calories and are high in good fat. Avocados also have a lot of vitamins and minerals in them like potassium, folate, vitamin B6, vitamin C, and vitamin E. Interesting right? So why not grow them at home? Here’s how you can grow avocados in a container at home.
Seed – remove the seed from the avocado and wash it well. Make sure you don’t scrub off the brown skin of the seed. Poke 3-4 toothpicks into the seed and mount it on glass with water. Make sure that the slightly pointed end is up and at least an inch of the bottom part of the seed is in the water. After several weeks you’ll notice that the seed has started sprouting roots and stem. Once the stem is 6 inches long, cut it into 3 inches and let it sprout and then shift it into a small container.
Soil – avocados grow in very sandy soil. Make sure you have 75% of sand, 25% of potting mix, and fertilizers all mixed for your avocados. Avocados don’t like moisture around the roots. So keep in mind that the soil should be well-draining.
Water – avocados grow in an arid climate and hence don’t require frequent watering. Observe the leaves of the avocado; if it’s slightly drooping or if the leaves have lost a little of their sheen, it’s a sign that your avocados need water. Do not overwater as it would cause the roots to rot. It is preferred to water them only twice a month.
Fertilizer – make sure you give your avocado plants a nutrient-rich fertilizer once a year.
